Almost time!

Yay! Almost time for vacation! We dropped off Buffy at the kennel/kitty hotel  (I always get sad leaving her, but I know she’ll be fine) and we’ve got a flight out tomorrow at 5:45 am. Don’t even get me started on that departure time.  I’m totally not a morning person, and I think I’ll probably be better off not sleeping tonight, since sleeping only 3-4 hours makes for a cranky Mel.

Speaking of flights, I just found out that a lot of airlines are going to start charging for the FIRST bag you check. Are they kidding?? Like I’m going to go on a week-long vacation with only what fits into a carry-on? Now I’m a girly girl, who likes clothing options and my own shampoo. Even pared down to the minimum, a carry-on would get me a weekend’s worth of clothing and no toiletries of any sort since we aren’t allowed liquids on planes. I suppose I understand that with fuel prices what they are, they need to charge more, but it seems awfully restrictive to make us pay to bring stuff with us on a vacation – it’s not really optional. Heck, it may be cheaper to Fed-Ex our stuff direct to our hotel room.

Tanning Update: Well, I’m noticeably tanner than the hubby finally. Not that that’s saying much, since he’s a video game nerd like myself, and therefore generally is only exposed to the glow of the computer rather than the sun. We’ll see tomorrow how I compare with my sister, who got all the tan genes in the family (and the light-colored eyes, darn her). At the very least, I actually feel more confident, so I’m happy.

Anyway, I’m really excited and really looking forward to seeing everyone. I keep a journal while on vacations, so when I get back, I’ll try to post some highlights with a few pictures!

Raiding Woes

I don’t plan on making this a World of Warcraft blog or really even talking about it that much, but last night got me kind of worked up, so I need to talk about it.

I had a bad night raiding last night on WoW. Now, I’m not a raider, so I guess it’s not the end of the world, but last night kind of solidified my stance on not really wanting to be a raider. My hubby got invited to a raid with a pretty good guild last night that we’ve been wanting to try raiding with since we’ve heard they’re really efficient. I didn’t really have any plans of doing anything serious that night, probably just logging on and doing some of the Fire Festival fun stuff. They mentioned they needed a hunter, the hubby mentioned I had one, and I got an invite, too. I was feeling a mix of nerves (I haven’t played much lately, so I’m kind of rusty) and excitement (we don’t get to run Gruul’s or Mags much at all), but I made sure I was all set on consumables and bullets, and off I went.

Mags went fairly well. After our first wipe, I noticed that all the silly PVPing I had done the previous day (another think I do very infrequently) had left my gear quite damaged and my gun was at 0 durability. Now it is a big no-no to show up at a raid unprepared in any way, hence the checking my bullets and consumables, but I never have gear issues, so I didn’t even think to check that before coming. I had to broadcast my issue to the whole raid so that I could go repair. Luckily, someone in the group had a field repair bot, so I got to repair right there, with little inconvenience to the raid, but I know I still caused at least a bit of exasperation in the raid leader, because I mean, really, who shows up to a raid with nearly broken gear? But I think I more than made up for that by coming out on the top of the damage meter by the end of the Mags run. Slight detour here – ever since discovering damage meters, I have become obsessed with them. I am convinced I belong in the top 3 of a 25-man, and if I’m on top, well, hot-damn, I’m proud of myself. Falling below top 3 makes me feel useless. I’m sure I’m not useless, but I can’t help feeling it. No one notices someone in the middle. Anyway…

So, on to Gruul’s. Now, I’ve never completed Gruul’s. I’ve been there once, and the group I went with wasn’t really ideal and we wiped over and over at the first boss until we decided to call it quits. First boss requires me and another hunter to co-tank one of the mobs. This apparently is quite common, but I’m not used to tanking. I’m fairly squishy. The first attempt was going pretty well until something happened (I didn’t notice what) and the group called for everyone to run out and reset the boss. Second attempt, I died fairly early on and watched sadly as my number 1 spot on the damage meter became number 5 while I laid there dead. Now, I have a few people who tell me it wasn’t my fault I died; even the raid leader said the healing on the hunters was a little lacking (all 3 of us died I believe). But still, I don’t like dying and not being useful. On our way to Gruul, I get back up to number 3 on the damage meters, but then I die really quickly again on Gruul. We had our first cave-in, I got frozen in the middle of falling rock trying to get away from other people, my computer lagged out, and when it finally caught up, I was dead. One of 2 people dead in the first 30 seconds or so. It was really embarrassing. Again, I watched the group take down the boss, not getting to experience it myself, and I watched my position drop to 6th, where I ended up at the end of the 2 runs.

As I said before, no one notices 6th. They only remember the idiot who didn’t repair before coming to a raid and died during both boss fights in Gruul’s. This could have been a great first impression and given me a lead-in for raiding content. I’m fairly confident that, had I not died, I would have been in the top 2 damage-doers. However, I now feel that I probably won’t be raiding again anytime soon. And I don’t really want to. I’m kind of bummed.

Sesame Street Deaths

I found this question at That’s My Answer!

You’ve been given 3 parachutes, but there are 4 characters who need them. Who will you not give one to: Big Bird? Ernie? Oscar the Grouch? Count von Count?

The hubby and I discussed and after about 5 minutes of reasoning, he decided Ernie doesn’t get a parachute because he’s kind of an idiot (though he had only a moment earlier said he’d have to survive so that Bert doesn’t kill himself). I am torn between the Count and Big Bird – Big Bird is kind of annoying and the Count kind of freaks me out (I vaguely remember a book from when I was little that had a picture of the Count that scared me).

Just a short post today, I’m off to see Get Smart with the Hubby and some friends!

Sooo…

Well, again, not a whole lot going on. I do have a post in mind about my irrational fear of spiders, but seeing as how it’s nearly bedtime, I don’t think I should be thinking about spiders.

I’ve been reading lots of young adult fantasy novels (Harry Potter type books) lately, so I think I may start up a little book review feature on here. I loved the Harry Potter series. Like, huge nerd love – I got books 4-6 the day they were released (I was a bit late getting into the whole thing), I went to the book release party at my local Barnes and Noble for the last book (and proceeded to wear earplugs for the rest of the weekend to avoid spoilers because I had to travel), I must see the movies the first weekend they’re out and buy them the day they are released on DVD, and I’ve even read fanfiction (and liked it…though I do try to stay out of the naughty fan fiction, some of those are just disturbing). So now that the last book is done <pouty face>, I’ve been trying to find another series to get into or just some individual books that are good.

Tanning update: I’ve tanned maybe twice since this post and got a little pink each time, but the little wedge of paleness in the fleshy bit between my thumb and forefinger is getting more noticeable (this is one of my indicators of getting a tan) as is the ring tan line on each ring finger, since I’ve kept the bling on while tanning. I’ve also bought a new gradual tanner that has gotten good reviews from Beauty Addict. I’ll probably use that a few days next week just before I leave. Though maybe I should test it once this week just to make sure it doesn’t make me look like an oompa loompa.

(I think I need to work on transitioning. I’m clearly a pretty crappy writer…just bouncing from topic to unrelated topic and all. Well, at least the years of scientific writing hasn’t rubbed off here. )

6 Questions

Well, nothing terribly exciting happened yesterday, so I’ll just do a meme!

What were you doing ten years ago? 10 years ago, I was a sophomore in high school. There wasn’t anything terribly exciting going on, since I didn’t have my license yet and wasn’t looking at colleges yet, but I think this was the time when I started talking to a boy we’ll call J. He was a bit of a bad boy, but I wasn’t hanging out with him outside of school yet, so nothing really rebellious.

What are five things on your to-do list today? I don’t have too much to do today really.

1. Go grocery shopping.

2. Look up some books online.

3. Call the cat’s kennel to confirm her upcoming stay.

4. ?

5. ?

Snacks you enjoy? I like mostly unhealthy stuff, like chocolate and cheetos, unfortunately. I may make some brownies later today.

Places you’ve lived? Several places in eastern PA, NJ, northern CA, west FL, middle TN, and northern SC.

What are 5 things you would do if you were a billionaire?

1. The obligatory “safe answer” – hire someone to help me wisely invest/whatever else you do with most of your money if you’re rich.

2. Buy a vacation home near Disney World and another in the Caribbean or Hawaii.

3. Donate some to animal causes.

4. Go on a shopping spree, including clothing and designer handbags/sunglasses for me and all the video games my hubby could ever want.

5. Upgrade our house/cars.

People you want to know more about? I’m not sure specifically. I’d always like to know more about nice people I could become friends with.

Tanning

I’ve been trying to get a small tan before I go to Disney World, but so far, the tanning is minimal. I did turn a lovely shiny shade of red after 2 hours at the beach on our trip to Myrtle Beach for our 1 year anniversary a few weeks ago. However, that has since peeled and faded into a weird pattern on my back that my hubby calls the X-Men symbol. Also, it was only my back that burned. Silly me forgot to roll over and at least burn both sides so that each side could fade into minimal tan. Hopefully I’ll get a bit tanner before I go.

Yes, I know it’s terrible to get a real tan and that I should be using tan-in-a-can, but I really can’t stand the smell and it always comes out orange. The last one I used, Dove Energy Glow did actually produce a realistic color, even after one use, but again, the smell was awful. That was kind of surprising given that it is a gradual tanner, which I would think would have less smell because it has less DHA (the stuff that reacts with your skin to turn it tanner). I guess if I’m still fluorescent a few days before leaving for Disney, I’ll use it again for a few days. And proceed to smell gross. I’ll keep you updated.

Happy Father’s Day

Just a short post today to say Happy Father’s Day! Not that my dad will see this, since no one knows about this blog yet, but maybe eventually he will! Here’s a little Father’s Day meme I found yesterday:

1. How long since you have been with your dad? I last saw him in March (~3 months ago).

2. How many siblings share your dad? One, my younger sister.

3. Will you see your dad tomorrow? No, sadly. We live several states apart. I will see him in 2 weeks, though!

4. Do you give him gifts on Father’s Day? Sometimes. I always send a card, though (usually a funny one).

5. Have you ever had a tough time in your relationship with your father? Not really, my dad is usually a lot of fun, almost like a kid. My teenage years may have been the hardest, but certainly not bad since I’ve actually always liked to hang out with my parents. I do struggle a bit these days with trying to convince him to retire.

6. What was the last thing that you did with your dad? I visited him in Naples, where we had lots of good meals, walked around downtown, and went on a nice boat-ride.

7. Growing up, was your dad tough on you? Sometimes. He expected the best from me – no laziness, good grades, no lying or other bad behavior, etc. I don’t wish it was any different.

8. Are you close to your father? I’d say yes. I don’t call as often as I should, but I love him very much and we have a lot of fun together.

9. How long since you have spoke to him? About 45 min.
